But that's not what I meant ..

Yesterday, Susan and I had one of those experiences where you simply cannot stop laughing! You know the kind of belly laughing that makes you cry if you try and say anything while you’re in hysterics?

Each evening after I’ve written the story for that day, I send it to Susan to spell check and grammar check and generally sense check (this one will go to her in about 30 mins for example).

So we’re relaxing in the sitting room and I say ‘Oh, I forgot to tell you .. you know the Richard Branson story from Monday last week?’

‘Yes’ she said, half interested.

‘Well when I said he came up and had breakfast, it was surreal .. I spelt it wrong and it auto corrected it and changed it to cereal! He came up and had breakfast, it was cereal! And then you sent it out!’

We both cracked up! It’s making me laugh now just typing it.
Susan couldn't stop laughing, 'I thought you meant wow, he's a billionaire but so normal he eats cereal...

How to look effortlessly brilliant

As I was walking Amelie and Leon to school this morning, we had a fascinating discussion about miracles and whether nothing was miraculous .. or whether everything was!

‘I don’t think there are such things as miracles like magic’ Amelie (the Harry Potter NUT) said, ‘but I do think some people are lucky.’

‘What role do you think luck plays in a successful life?’ I asked her.

‘I think you have to work really hard’ she said, ‘unless you win the lottery or something!’

Just as the discussion was getting juicy, we reached the school gates and they ran into school!

When I got home I thought about the influence I wanted to have on their young minds in this area. And what I really thought about being lucky and being successful and experiencing miracles.

A discussion I had with a politician I was working with in the week popped into my head.

‘I didn’t think for a minute that I was going to win’ he said, ‘so I...

A few months back, Sooze and I went to Starbucks for lunch as we very often do.

‘Aren’t you coming in too?’ she asked me, as I pulled up outside.

‘No, I need to get back, can we just grab something and go?’ I said.

‘Ok!’ she said, ‘I’ll be as quick as I can.’

About five minutes later she came out carrying the coffees and Starbucks bag, but she had a strange look on her face.

‘What’s the matter,’ I said ‘are you ok?’

‘Oh my goodness, that was awful!’ she said.

‘What was?’

Susan handed me my coffee and said ‘Well .. I had ordered the coffees and was waiting for them to be delivered, and there was this dreadful woman in front of me having a go at one of the staff.’

‘Which one, anyone we know?’ We knew practically all the staff like life-long-friends as we go there so much!

‘The lovely Polish girl with the brown hair .. Kammy’ Susan said.

The OTHER perspective

One of the great things about staying on Necker Island, is that almost everything is included. And not just food and drink and things like that, but kite surfing, wake boarding, water skiing, scuba diving, sailing, snorkelling and things like that! And all with fantastic equipment and truly world class one-on-one instructors.

Every morning Steve would come up at breakfast and say ‘What do you fancy doing today?’ And we’d pick what we wanted to do that day. For the first week, both Susan and I dug into kite surfing – great fun but very challenging. Towards the end of the week, I decided I’d try tennis lessons first thing in the morning and then do kite surfing in the afternoon.

The first morning for my first lesson, I turned up keen as can be, not having had a tennis lesson since I was about 10 years old (and even then I only had about three total!)

Jose greeted me with a tennis racquet and said ‘Let’s just knock it back and forth and see what...

On one of my calls today, we got into a really juicy, soul searching topic that reminded me of a story from a few years back.

When Leon was born, it was a perfect home water birth delivery. After several strenuous hours, he just popped out underwater! (At least that’s how it seemed to me, Susan assures me it was rather different)

I was sitting at the side and I could see his head under the water, in the midwife’s hands.

‘Just wait for the next contraction’ she said to Susan, with supreme confidence. Beryl had delivered Leon’s two older sisters with us, both in the very same room, so we knew her well and trusted her implicitly.

But there is something about your baby coming out underwater and staying there for another 30 seconds that just frightened me! It seemed wrong.

Sure enough though, on the next contraction he slid out and Beryl held up this perfect little baby for Susan to hold in her arms as she slumped, exhausted in the pool.

It was a truly magical...

A week before we left for the British Virgin Islands, Leon and Amelie got invited to a roller disco party. Amelie is 3 years older and had been before so she was very excited. Leon was somewhat more apprehensive!

‘Why can’t you come with me?’ Leon asked Susan.

‘Because, we are going to be in America!’ Susan said for the 4th time in 2 minutes. (We weren’t actually going to be in America, but all the children understand that America means away for some sleeps!)

‘But I’m terrible at roller skating! I’ll be the worst one there. It’s just not fair!’ Leon was getting very distressed.

‘You’ll be ok Leon’ Amelie said as encouragingly as she possibly could, ‘you’ve just got to try and do your best and you’ll be fine. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t done it before, you’ll soon learn.’

‘I can’t do it, I’ll be rubbish!’

Amelie stooped to look in...

The 5 Billion Dollar Question

And we are back, finally!  Wow .. what an incredible couple of weeks in the British Virgin Islands. It was our first visit and so we didn’t really know what to expect, but I have to say .. it was FABULOUS!!

Since Susan and I got together, we had 4 children in quite a short space of time and so we never had time for a honeymoon .. in fact, in the last 12 years we’ve never had any vacations on our own without the kids at all.

So this time, we decided we would treat ourselves to something special and booked two weeks on Richard Branson’s private island – Necker. It was like nothing we’ve ever experienced before, the only way I can think to describe it is to say it was truly MAGICAL!!

There are so many great stories I want to share with you, and I will .. but today, I wanted to share just one of the things I found so inspirational about our experience.

During dinner with Richard one night, the conversation started out very polite and somewhat...

The formula for failure

I just got off a call where we were talking about a program we’ve been running for a number of years, and how when we changed the access to the program and made it easier for people to enroll, the number of people taking the program dropped significantly.

You’d think it would be the other way round wouldn’t you?

But it’s a fact, in certain circumstances, if you make it more expensive or more difficult to access, people will value it more because they see it as more ‘special!’

I remember buying a load of stuff from Nightingale Conant years ago, and because I bought a certain amount I got 2 old programs of Jim Rohn for practically nothing.

Because I hadn’t paid full price for it, I didn’t value it. As I didn’t value it, I didn’t want to waste any time on it, so I didn’t listen to it!

I had it on my book shelf for AGES!

Then, one day, I don’t know what prompted it, but I put one of the DVDs in and watched the first...

How do you get good judgement?

Ahh, sorry!! I didn’t mean to leaving you hanging yesterday .. I forgot to come back to the gun after the story took a different turn.

The good news is I made it .. phew!!

So anyway, there I was having this very odd experience, observing this body, that was looking down at this gun shoved in its chest.

The guy turned me around and with the gun in my back marched me off away from the other people on the beach. As we went behind some rocks, what little light there was disappeared. I felt sure this was gonna be the end.

After about 20 yards, he pushed me towards some stone steps that led back up to the road. I nervously climbed the first few and then turned slightly to the left and took half a peek back over my shoulder at my abductor.

The light from one of the street lights up on the road was now just reaching us and his sinister, shadowy form was transforming into .. a sort of uniform.

I stopped and spun round to look at him face to face and to my absolute delight, I realised he was...

‘Do you wanna go to Starbucks?’ Susan asked me.

‘Sure, let’s go!’ I said and we jumped in the car and sped off.

About 2 miles from home I slowed down to go past the little village school. Once we’d passed it, I accelerated back up to about 40mph, which was the speed limit for that particular stretch.

We were chatting casually as we approached a mild bend in the road, then suddenly, a car came around the corner, but instead of turning with the bend, it was going straight on. Straight into us! He was looking down and texting instead of turning the steering wheel to make the turn.

It all happened in a blink of eye. ‘Mind out!!’ Susan screamed.

I slammed on the brakes, but it was too late, he was too close.

Then I turned the steering wheel and bumped up on to the walkway at the side of the road. We just made it out of the way in time. Then I dropped back on to the road and carried on driving.

‘Oh my goodness,’ Susan said,...
