Your body doesn't think intellectually

Oct 27, 2016
It’s a familiar pain.. When I drink something cold .. or hot .. or breath in deeply when I’m outside .. I get a horribly uncomfortable feeling in one of my teeth on the left side of my upper jaw.

I’m dreading what work might be required and I’m hoping that it just goes away on its own. But it’s been a few days now .. and it’s not going away on its own is it?

I really don’t like going to the dentist .. emotionally I mean. Intellectually I know it makes sense but my body doesn’t think intellectually! It’s probably as a result of my childhood .. too lazy to take proper care of my teeth, so I had a lot of fillings when I was young.

But they didn’t give you injections on the NHS 40 years ago (National Health Service), so if you needed a filling, they just did it! And I needed lots of them.

I can vividly remember gripping the arm rests in Mrs Peacock’s dentist chair as she drilled away with an evil smirk on her face! (Ok, so I don’t actually remember the smirk but I’m sure it was there!)

I started seeing the hygienist every 6 months a few years back as well. I don’t like that either!

The first time I went she spent 40 minutes scrapping and jet blasting the front, back and sides of every tooth. I could taste the blood in my mouth as she went way too close to the gums with her scraping and poking. Every 5 minutes she’d say ‘Spit!’

And I’d spit out a mouthful of blood! This CAN NOT be right I thought to myself!!

When she was finished she said, as nice pie ‘There! See you again in 6 months. Well done!’

As I walk out, I always think to myself .. I think this one will do for a while!

It’s funny isn’t it .. most people don’t like the dentist. But compared to the alternative, we are SOOOO lucky to have the option.

Sure, not going to the dentist is great compared to going to the dentist .. but that’s not the real choice is it?

It’s not going to the dentist and having long term, agonising tooth ache .. or going to the dentist and suffering mild inconvenience .. and not suffering long term agonising tooth ache!

Intellectually, this is a no brainer. But our body just doesn’t think intellectually! Our bodies convince us that the fear is real and that’s enough for us to encourage life to get in the way and not make the choices we need to make for long term health.

It’s pretty easy for us to see this playing out, particularly when something goes wrong with our teeth.

But how often do we do exactly the same thing with other things in our life that need fixing? Very often we know what the fix is too, don’t we? But we don’t want to do it for some reason.

Are there unpopular choices you need to make with regard to your relationships? Your finances? Your career? Your health?

Weeds don’t remove themselves over time. You need to do what you need to do to grab them .. and yank them out.

If there’s something your putting off because your body is scared, but intellectually you know it make sense .. pull up your big boy pants (or big girl pants for the ladies) and get on with it!!

Your body doesn’t think intellectually, but YOU do!

Until next time ..
