Moves In Mysterious Ways Indeed!
Reminiscing about the ‘old days’ over the weekend, I remembered something that happened to a friend of mine about 10 years ago.
Things had been going ok for him, but then he got the opportunity to invest in a business that was a gonna be a game changer for him financially!
He was ecstatic.
Then someone pipped him to the post.
He was sad.
Then he had an even bigger and better opportunity within the business. He invested £100k for a big share.
He was ecstatic again .. even more so than before.
As time went by though, he realised that all was not as it had seemed. His money was as good as lost.
He was devastated.
After months, the business agreed to pay him back the £100k.
He was ecstatic one more time.
But the money didn’t appear.
You guessed it .. he was sad. And he was angry.
Eventually, the money was repaid to his account.
When he looked though, the same amount that he’d invested was not returned.
He’d invested £100k at a time when the exchange rate was over $2 to £1. By the time he received the payment, the exchange rate had shifted significantly.
It was now just $1.55 to £1.
So the £100k he had invested was $200k.
But when the $200k was returned, he actually got back around £130k!!
He was over the moon!!
When you look at a run of events like this, we really are blown about emotionally aren’t we? Batted one way, then the other .. then back again .. and over and over.
One minute we’re happy .. then it all falls apart .. then we build it better than before .. then someone steals it .. then we find a new one .. etc. etc.
Makes you wonder if all the emotional energy we spend is worth it doesn’t it?
What would happen if we did our best .. but then just accepted the things that happened to us without all the emotional turmoil (or at least some of the things!)
Does EVERYTHING have to be such a drama?
Does it really help anything?
Or is it better to go through life with that calmness of mind that Allen describes as ‘one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom?’
